The Solute-Exclusion Zone: A Promising Application for Mirofluidics
نویسندگان
چکیده
While unique phenomena exist at fluid-solid phase intersections, many interfacial phenomena manifest solely on limited scales—i.e., the nm-μm ranges—which stifles their application potential. Here, we constructed microfluidic chips that utilize the unique long-distance interface effects of the Solute-Exclusion Zone (EZ) phenomenon to mix, separate, and guide samples in desired directions within microfluidic channels. On our “EZ Chip”, we utilized the interfacial force generated by EZs to transport specimens across streamlines without the need of an off-chip power source. The advantages of easyintegration, low fabrication cost, and no off-chip energy input make the EZ suitable for independent, portable lab-on-chip system applications.

Estimation of zeolite application effect on solute transport parameters at different soils using HYDRUS-1D model
ABSTRACT-Application of models for simulation of solute and pollutants transport in soil can reduce time and costs for remediation process. HYDRUS-1D model was developed to simulate the one–dimensional flow of soil water, heat, solute and viruses in variably saturated–unsaturated porous media. The objective of this investigation is to determine the solute transport parameters in disturbed soil ...
متن کاملIntroducing ectoine as compatible solute: biosynthetic pathway, production and applications
Halophilic microorganisms cope with environmental stresses by producing and accumulating compatible solutes. Ectoine is one of the most important members of compatible solutes which have extra protective properties compared to other compatible solutes. Ectoine attracts several scientific and commercial attention because of their multiple industrial applications. This brief review presents appli...
متن کاملSurfaces and interfacial water: evidence that hydrophilic surfaces have long-range impact.
It is generally thought that the impact of surfaces on the contiguous aqueous phase extends to a distance of no more than a few water-molecule layers. Older studies, on the other hand, suggest a more extensive impact. We report here that colloidal and molecular solutes suspended in aqueous solution are profoundly and extensively excluded from the vicinity of various hydrophilic surfaces. The wi...
متن کاملImaging hyporheic zone solute transport using electrical resistivity
Traditional characterization of hyporheic processes relies upon modelling observed in-stream and subsurface breakthrough curves to estimate hyporheic zone size and infer exchange rates. Solute data integrate upstream behaviour and lack spatial coverage, limiting our ability to accurately quantify spatially heterogeneous exchange dynamics. Here, we demonstrate the application of near-surface ele...
متن کاملWater, Energy and Life: Fresh Views from the Water's Edge.
Recent observations have shown an unexpected feature of water adjacent to hydrophilic surfaces: the presence of wide interfacial zone that excludes solutes. The exclusion zone is charged, while the water beyond is oppositely charged, yielding a battery-like feature. The battery is powered by absorbed radiant energy. Implications of this energetic feature are discussed. It appears that the prese...
